Local cuisine is as varied as the people who live here. Of course, there’s always plenty of locally grown produce, coffees, the best banana bread anywhere, and just-caught-this-morning fish to enjoy. Attending a luau is an introduction to both native culture and cuisine.
Our location on the east side of the Valley Isle means we’re a little isolated from the rest of Maui. That means we rely heavily on what’s locally grown and produced. But local cuisine in Hana is anything but boring. Because our condos include functional kitchens, you can also cook (or reheat) local fare whenever you’re ready.
Restaurants
Because Hana is small, there are only a couple of restaurants in the area, but worth checking out.
The Bamboo Hale at Hana Farms
Encompassing a farm, a farm stand, a bakery, and a restaurant, Hana Farms offers the best of the area to locals and visitors alike. This seven-acre farm is situated on the Road to Hana. The Bamboo Hale (“hah-LEH,” meaning “house” in Hawaiian) offers a menu of both pizzas and salads that feature local farm-to-table ingredients. The Stand also has grab-and-go foods like sandwiches and bagels as well as foods and products from other Hana vendors.
The restaurant is open 10:30 am to 4:30 pm Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 am to 8:00 pm Friday and Saturday (no reservations needed.) Their menu is available online and includes gluten-free options for the pizzas. When you return home, you can order a little bit of Hana from the Farm’s online store, including their banana bread.
Huli Huli Chicken
Located at 175 Haneoo Rd, Hana, HI 96713 (808-639-2163), Huli Huli Chicken is situated by the oceanside. Their menu offers their signature dish as well as a sandwich and a combo plate. They are open from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.
Island Chef
This restaurant is located at 1601 Hana Hwy, Hana, 96713 (808) 248-8428) and is a small roadside seafood restaurant. It’s an under-the-radar spot that doesn’t even have a website.
Food Trucks
Wherever you see food trucks, you’ll find all kinds of delicious things, hot and fresh. In keeping with the Island vibe, food trucks are much more casual but no less delicious. There are several in Hana, but you’ll need to get there early. Sometimes, they run out!
Ae’s Thai Kitchen
Located in the food truck park next to the Hana Farmer’s Market. The white truck serves burgers, and fish sandwiches, and includes a few vegan/vegetarian options while the red truck specializes in Thai food. Both offer takeout, accept credit cards, and offer outdoor seating. They are open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Fridays, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays, and closed Sundays.
Da Fish Shack
Whether you like fish tacos, fish burgers, poke’, or shrimp, or you’re ready to settle in with a good pizza or burger, Da Fish Shack is ready for you. Open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, they also have outdoor seating. Located at 5260 Hana Hwy, Hana, Maui, HI 96713.
Thai Food by Pranee
Foodies who enjoy Thai food will also be pleasantly surprised here. Traditional Thai dishes are served to be enjoyed in the outdoor dining area. Located at 5050 Uakea Rd Hana, HI 96713, they’re open 11:00 am to 5:00 pm daily except Wednesday and Thursday.
These are just some of Maui’s local offerings, with many more food trucks available daily. Ask us, we’ll tell you where they are.
