Bodyboarding is one of the many water sports we enjoy here in Maui. It’s a less-expensive primer for surfing. Even children can learn to ride the smaller, lighter board before tackling standing up on a surfboard.
People on The Valley Isle enjoy riding the waves all year long. If waves figure into your upcoming Maui plans, remember that December and January are peak swell times for Maui’s Northshore. It’s also a great time to make plans to visit the annual Pā’ia Bay Beachfest, a family-friendly activity sponsored by the Pā’ia Youth & Cultural Center Maui.
The Pā’ia Youth Council And Beachfest
This nonprofit operates the Pā’ia Youth & Cultural Center Maui. The Council offers area youth social, educational, recreational, vocational, and cultural activities based on Hawaiian values.
Every year, the PYCC’s schedule includes the Pā’ia Bay Beachfest during peak swell times. The Pā‘ia Bay Beachfest Bodyboard & Surf Competition was founded in 1995 and has become a yearly haven for both bodyboarders and surfers alike.
Organized by PYCC staff, alumni, and the community, Beachfest is held at the beach next to the Center. The event is divided into groups by age, gender, bodyboarding style, and equipment. More than 100 people sign up every year. This family-friendly event is alcohol-, nicotine- and drug-free.
For a preview of the beach in Pā’ia, visit the Pā’ia Bay Webcam for live beach video in real-time. You may see darkness since we’re three hours behind Los Angeles and six hours behind New York.
The Northshore of Maui
Pā’ia is a historic tourist town nestled in between Kahalui and Haiku along Maui’s edge. The town is less than two hours north of Hana on Highway 360 (aka “The Road to Hana.”)
Known as Maui’s “Northshore,” it includes Kahalui, where our Maui airport is located. The Northshore consists of the roughly defined areas with the cities Kahalui, Pā’ia, and Haiku. The area is not as developed as other areas. This means that it’s less crowded than more populated parts of Maui, including the beach areas.
