This crescent-shaped, black-and-white sand beach is only 100 feet wide and 1,000 feet long, and includes black rocks and lush greenery. As one of Maui’s lesser-known beaches, Hamoa isn’t as busy or crowded as others. We may be biased, but we think this cozy spot is Hana’s best beach, which is why we’ve included it in our Hamoa Beach Guide to help you plan your visit.

What To At Hamoa Beach
What’s your favorite water sport or activity at the beach? At Hamoa Beach, you can enjoy:
- Surfing
- Snorkeling
- Swimming
You can walk through the sand and look for driftwood and seashells, too. Beyond the ocean, you can also enjoy walking/hiking, exploring the rock formations and tide pools on the edges of the cove, and looking for seashells. Shaded spots in the surrounding cliffs and vegetation are perfect for relaxing.
Available Amenities
There are basic amenities here. You can park in the limited roadside parking at Hamoa Beach, so it’s best to arrive early.
Also available here are portable restrooms, foot showers, and picnic tables under a shaded pavilion.
What To Bring
Hamoa Beach is a public beach but has no lifeguard or other official presence. There are also no food or other vendors on Hamoa Beach, so you’ll need to bring your own.
- Food and drink: bring plenty of water, snacks, a packed lunch for your party, and anything else you might need. Visit some of the local Hana bakeries the day before to get the best banana bread for your trip.
- Reef-friendly sunscreen to protect both you and our coral growth that feeds the aquatic wildlife.
- Hats and sunglasses for sun protection
- Sturdy sandals and other appropriate footwear: exploring the rock formations can lead to some slippery rocks and other hazards, so make sure you have footwear to protect your feet.
- Umbrellas and beach chairs for relaxing on the beach
- Boogie boards to enjoy the water

Know Before You Go
Because Hamoa Beach has no lifeguards, it’s important to watch ocean conditions, especially during the winter months when the currents and surf are stronger. Avoid swimming during high currents or strong surf. Always keep safety top of mind.
Leave No Trace and Respect the Environment
Hamoa Beach has deep roots in Hawaiian history and legend. Because Maui is a special place, we care for the land and the environment. We ask that you:
- Pack up and remove all trash
- Use foot showers to rinse the sand from your feet
- Use only reef-safe sunscreen to help preserve the delicate coastal ecosystem
- Respect posted signage and local customs, including signs that indicate that a place is sacred
