Visit Stunning Hamoa Beach

South of the Seven Sacred Pools is a little place called Hamoa Beach. It’s not only incredibly beautiful but also tucked away from the busy tourist areas. It routinely is recognized as one of  the best beaches in the United States.     Hamoa is one of Maui’s most incredible beaches, near Hana, at Mile Marker 51. Access isn’t obvious and the entrance path is not visible to the casual passerby. If you don’t know where it is, you might miss it. But if you get a chance, don’t miss this gem! A Small and Beautiful Beach

Maui isn’t all that large, to begin with, and Hamoa Beach is only 100 feet wide by 1000 feet long, shaped like a crescent. Its beach is made up of fine black lava rock and white coral sand.   Surrounded by stunning cliffs, Hamoa Beach has very limited access. This remote location adds to the exclusivity of this gorgeous Maui beach. There is a small service road at one end, where you can park and then walk.  The other access point is a flight of stairs that is located from a hotel shuttle drop-off. It’s just a five-minute drive off the Road to Hana, down Haneoo Road.   Because there is so little development here, there is no “runoff.” This leads to clean, clear blue water year-round for swimming, surfing, and other water activities. Snorkeling is wonderful on calm days.   The calmer ocean waves of the summer and early fall are ideal for swimming.  Winter swells bring great conditions for surfing, bodysurfing, and boogie boarding.   The beach’s “salt-and-pepper” sand is generally a silky texture which makes it ideal for strolling.

Amenities

Unlike other beaches, Hamoa Beach is near property owned by a local hotel. Therefore, the hotel offers some amenities to visitors that other beaches may not have, such as:  

• Public restrooms
• Outdoor showers
• A snack stand
• A foot-washing station at the base of the paved path
• Pockets of shade along the beach

Warnings

Like most beaches anywhere in the state of Hawaii, there are some warnings you need to remember. Flash flooding, undercurrents, swells, and sudden weather events can lead to dangerous conditions.   There are no lifeguards on Hamoa Beach. You need to be especially cautious if you go swimming or surfing. You are responsible for your own safety as well as the safety of your family and fellow travelers.  If there are swells, the waves can be rough. Since there are no lifeguards, everyone needs to always exercise caution in the water and around the water’s edge.   Pay attention to the signs in the parking areas. The limited parking is available only at the top of the hill.  You’ll need to practice your parallel parking skills before going. Also, it’s a steep walk down the access path to get to the beach.
