Whatever state you live in, chances are things are opening back up again. Slowly, the US is open for business again. Hawaii began reopening in November of 2020 on a limited basis.
Is there a “
best time” to visit Maui? Yes—when you’re ready. Of course, our weather can be somewhat unpredictable, especially during hurricane season, June 1 through November 30
th. It’s important to monitor the weather before your trip so you can be aware before you arrive. Fortunately, tropical activity doesn’t happen all that much, but it’s still important so you can plan accordingly.
Current COVID Restrictions For Maui
Be forewarned that if you are planning to travel into Maui, you have two options:
- Submit a negative test for COVID-19 within 72 hours of traveling into Maui (or any of the Islands.)
- Agree to a ten-day quarantine upon arrival, which includes a one-use hotel room key.
You may also be required to take a second rapid-response antigen test when you arrive in Maui. Proof of vaccination will exempt you from the second test.
After planning your trip, you need to set up an account at
Safe Travels Hawaii. Create your trip, and upload your travel and hotel information. When you’ve taken your test, you’ll upload that information into the app, then complete the required health questionnaire within 24 hours of flying.
You’ll need to print the resulting QR Code and a copy of your health records for flying, renting a car and checking into your hotel. There is airport staff taking temperatures at airports nationwide.
Masks are, at this point, still required indoors, and only encouraged for outdoor activities. The mask mandate includes those who are vaccinated. Social distancing and smaller gatherings are still active.
When Is It Less Crowded?
Maui is a favorite destination all year long, but there are times to visit when there are fewer crowds.
April through mid-June are considered “
spring,” and there is less demand in the run-up to summer. September is also a time when there is less demand when kids begin going back to school.
If you’re planning a visit later in the year, October through early November is a good time to plan. After the middle of November, the rains return. Prices and demand are lower and the weather is better for a visit.
The first part of December can also be amenable, up until the holidays. Then right before Christmas through the New Year, things get busy again, as it does during Spring Break and Easter.
Riding The Road To Hana
It’s one of Maui’s most famous attractions, with a range of things to see along the way. Too many people hurry down the road and don’t really explore it. Don’t do that—you’re here to enjoy your visit.
Instead of trying to do the trip in one day, taking your time is a better option. Make accommodations for one or two overnight stays so you don’t have to rush. Wait until after the commuters and the crowds have gone, after 9:30 am, and take a leisurely drive to Hana. You’ll be able to visit all the sights without hurrying, as Nature intended. The next morning, you can do the same thing on your journey out of Hana, and see what you missed the first time.
