One of the many reasons people visit Maui is to see the incredible sunrises and sunsets in Haleakalā. But you have multiple options for exploring Haleakalā National Park. Haleakalā National Park’s various activities can satisfy many outdoor adventurers’ needs, from the incredible red-sand landscape to the lush green areas around the waterfalls.
Haleakalā National Park offers a variety of activities, from awe-inspiring sunrise and sunset experiences to epic hikes, wildlife spotting, and adventure sports. Whether you’re seeking serene moments above the clouds, challenging trails, or local flora and fauna, the park has something for every visitor.
Getting there
From our front door, you’ll take State Highway 360 and drive south.
Ensure your vehicle has plenty of fuel for the trip from Hana Kai Maui and back, since there are no fuel stations around the park. You’ll also need to bring snacks and supplies, as there are no concessions. (Restrooms are available.)
Stargazing, Sunrises, And Sunsets
Catching the sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā is a bucket-list experience. The summit is over 10,000 feet high and offers panoramic views that are equally stunning at sunset and less crowded.
Going for sunrise requires reservations, but sunset is open to all with a quieter but equally incredible experience. (You’ll pay $30 per car to enter the park.) The dramatic lighting and unique volcanic landscape make this a photographer’s dream. However, the high elevation means chilly temperatures, so bring extra clothing layers like jackets and extra socks.
The Haleakalā Trails
This signature trail descends into the Haleakalā crater with a view like Mars’ landscape. The entire hike is 11 miles round-trip, but many opt for a shorter out-and-back to experience the dramatic scenery, cinder cones, and unique native plants like the silversword. The trail is challenging due to elevation and loose terrain. But it’s one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the park’s volcanic environment. Hikers should be prepared for sun exposure and rapid weather changes.
The Kīpahulu District: Pīpīwai Trail and ʻOheʻo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)
The lush Kīpahulu District, accessible via the Road to Hana, offers a much different experience from the summit. The Pīpīwai Trail is a 4-mile round-trip hike through bamboo forests and past towering waterfalls, ending at the impressive Waimoku Falls. The nearby Kūloa Point Trail leads to the famous Seven Sacred Pools, perfect for scenic walks and waterfall views. Sturdy shoes and rain gear are recommended since this area is humid and often rainy.
Ranger Programs and Wildlife Viewing
Participating in ranger-led programs provides insight into the park’s geology, ecology, and cultural history. Haleakalā is home to more endangered species than any other U.S. national park, including the nēnē (Hawaiian goose) and the rare silversword plant. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting local species, especially in areas like Hosmer Grove. Programs vary by season and availability, so check in at the visitor center for the latest schedule.
For thrill-seekers, ziplining near the park offers a unique way to experience Maui’s upcountry forests and dramatic terrain. Skyline Hawaii provides several zipline tour options, combining adrenaline with scenic views. Additionally, biking down from the summit is a popular guided activity, offering an exhilarating descent with panoramic views. These activities are outside the park’s core conservation areas but add adventure to your Haleakalā experience. They are best suited for those comfortable with heights and increased physical activity.
Camping and Wilderness Cabins
Haleakalā offers nature lovers drive-in campgrounds (Hosmer Grove and Kīpahulu) and wilderness cabins for backcountry stays. Camping allows you to experience sunrise, sunset, and stargazing without driving up or down the mountain after dark. Facilities are basic, and the weather can be unpredictable, but the solitude and connection to the landscape are unmatched. Reservations are recommended, especially for cabins.
