Winter Packing for Maui is not the same as packing for a trip anywhere else. Winter weather in the southern US can vary. But on The Valley Isle, it stays relatively the same—warm with occasional rainstorms.
Because you don’t need to bring as much, you may be able to pack one carry-on bag and avoid baggage fees. Check with your airline’s carry-on rules.
You’ll pack much the same thing whatever time of year you visit. As part of our Hana Kai Maui travel tips, here’s what you’ll add to your travel bag.
Dressing For Comfort
Naturally, the Maui island vibe is all about comfort and summer wear. Of course, you’ll pack multiple bathing suits, even if you plan to hang out on the lanai or the beach. You’ll need flip-flops and other comfortable shoes to go to the beach and back.
You’ll also need to bring supplies specific to your itinerary. That is, if you’re planning to do some hiking or cycling, bring some thick socks and sturdy shoes or hiking boots to protect your feet.
Board or cargo shorts and T-shirts or short sleeve shirts for both men and women are de riguer. Women should also include a couple of sundresses for dining out, along with flat or low-heel sandals, while men should also include comfortable sneakers or casual other shoes. Consider pieces that will also work for sightseeing or other activities. T-shirts, shorts, and other comfortable garments double as swimsuit coverups as well.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Sunscreen is vital to visiting Maui. Generous application can prevent painful sunburn, which can ruin your vacation. Make sure you have reef-friendly sunscreen as part of your winter packing for Maui.
Our ecosystem is delicate, so your sunscreen must be reef-safe. Since 2021, only sunscreens made from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide have been allowed in Hawaii. Other chemical sunscreens cause serious problems for coral reefs, which feed aquatic wildlife throughout the inland waterways.
Mineral-based sunscreens are readily available throughout the US and Maui. Tip: Buy them here when you arrive at a chain store (Target, Costco, etc.) to save room in your suitcase. You can also buy other toiletries when you arrive.
Protection From The Elements
Winter packing for Maui should, ironically, include some winter gear. You might not realize that sometimes, it snows on Maui at high elevations. If you’re planning to watch the sunrise (or sunset) at Haleakala, you’ll need a warm jacket and thick (or extra) socks to stay warm at over 10,000 feet. The evenings can cool off considerably, so a sweatshirt might be enough if you’re not attending a high-elevation sunrise or sunset.
Water sports like surfing should include additional sun protection. Rash guards offer more coverage.
Because rain is frequent in Maui, include a light rain jacket.
If you’re bringing any electronics—smartphone, camera, etc.— pack protection for each one. Waterproof cases and bags are readily available and can keep these expensive accessories safe and dry.
