Notable People From Maui

We’ve already blogged about famous folks who call Maui home, either part-time or full-time, but celebrities aren’t the only notable people who are either from Maui or call it home.

Shane Patrick Victorino, “The Flyin’ Hawaiian”

Since his 2003 debut with MLB’s San Diego Padres, Shane Victorino has played baseball on both sides of the US. He has twice been an All-Star and World Series Champion, and four times won a Golden Glove Award. Additionally, he has also won the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 2008 and the Branch Rickey Award in 2011.

His father is the Mayor of Maui County, Mike Victorino, and was previously a state representative in Hawaii. Before he went professional, Shane played football, soccer and basketball as well as baseball in high school. His career saw him play for the San Diego Padres, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Boston Red Sox, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as well as some tenure in the minor league.

Cecilia “Cissy” Suyat Marshall

Born in the unincorporated city of Pu’unene in Maui to parents who emigrated from The Phillippines, Ms. Marshall is still an active civil rights activist at the age of 92. After moving to New York City, she worked for the NAACP, and some of her work included the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education (1954.) She also married future Supreme Court Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall, and they had two sons.

Ms. Marshall continues the fight for civil rights, as well as preserving history with works such as an oral history interview in 2013. Her interview is featured in the National Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Beverly Gannon

If fine dining and amazing local food is your passion, make friends with Beverly “Bev” Gannon, owner of Gannon’s Restaurant. Born and raised in Dallas, she worked in entertainment until graduating from London’s Le Cordon Bleu. After London, she moved with her husband to Maui and started a catering business and eventually, several restaurants.

Ms. Gannon is also one of a group of chefs responsible for developing Hawaiian regional cuisine in the 1990’s. Her namesake restaurant, Gannon’s, is located in Wailea, on the west side of Maui. Herthe farm-to-table restaurant, Hali’imaile General Store, is in Makawao, northwest of Hana and southeast of Paia.
