The Best Waterfalls Near Hana Kai Maui
You’ve probably heard about the Seven Sacred Pools, also called Ohe’o Gulch, but that’s not the only waterfall to visit when visiting Hana. These waterfalls are all accessible via the Road to Hana.
· Paihi Falls/Wailua Falls

· Waimoku Falls
Less than two miles south of Wailua Falls and less than ten miles from Hana Kai Maui is Waimoku Falls, located inside Haleakalā National Park. It’s at the top of the Seven Sacred Pools. At 400 feet, it’s also the tallest. Hike the Pipiwai Trail to get to the falls. You’ll go through the bamboo forest that takes you past several other smaller waterfalls on your way.
· Makahiku Falls
Another part of the Seven Sacred Pools is 200 feet high in the Kīpahulu section of Haleakalā National Park.
· Hanawi Falls
Ten miles north of Hana Kai Maui is Hanawi Falls, and just after Mile Marker 24 is Hanawi Falls. Also called Upper Waikani Falls, it is surrounded by a lush natural rainforest with three 70-foot cascades.
While there are multiple other waterfalls around The Valley Isle, these are within 15 miles of Hana Kai Maui.
Waterfall Cautions
As beautiful as waterfalls are, they are not without the potential for danger. Like many spots in Maui, waterfalls are also culturally significant places, but may also be somewhat risky. Before you venture out, the Department of Land and Natural Resources offers some safety precautions to consider:
- Do not drink water from a waterfall, stream, or other source. The water may be clean and clear, but bacteria can also live in the water.
- Do not walk or swim in the water with open cuts or injuries. Bacteria that cause Leptospirosis frequently exist here and can cause infection.
- Wear secure sandals or water shoes for the same reasons, and because of the slippery and sharp rocks that can cut.
- Don’t swing from ropes or jump off cliffs. You may not see any obstructions or how deep an area is, and you can become seriously injured.
- No swimming. Most areas are closed off from swimming, especially at the Seven Sacred Pools, because of the possible dangers from undercurrents and hidden objects like rocks.
- Stay on designated trails, follow all posted laws, and remove all trash. Please respect the grounds and the area, and stay safe while you’re here.
We want you to enjoy your time here and want to see you again.
